George Will Joins Rush, Betting Against America
In an earlier post I quoted George Will on This Week with George Stephanopoulos, as he discussed the tough issues facing the Republican party. In response to George Stephanopoulos’s assertion that the Republican party is being “branded as the party of no,” George Will responded with the following little nugget:
I happen to believe that no is a pretty good word in politics. Most beautiful five words in the English language are the first five words of the first amendment. “Congress shall make no law,” period. But beyond that, in fact, Mr. Obama, by the clarity of his program and the energy of his program, is going to help the Republicans redefine themselves. They are going to be an opposition to this. They’re going to be again a party of more limited government, and if Mr. Obama’s program works, he wins. If not, the Republican revival assured.
This passage is remarkably cynical. If Barack Obama’s “program” works it isn’t just President Obama who wins, its the American people as well. Clearly budgets could continue to soar, deficits could grow without any growth in GDP, which would be a smashing victory for the GOP. Unfortunately it may also stifle the new optimism that has been awakened in and ever growing electorate, and then yes, the 21% of self identified Republican conservatives may again find themselves in the cat bird seat ready to take power.
More and more it appears that the only way Republicans can win is if Americans become so disillusioned they simply skip the polls on election day. The Republican base is too small to carry an election and the middle, even if it is split isn’t enough to pull the numbers up. So, pray for bad times, retreat to radical fundamentalism, and wait; that seems to be the Republican recipe for success.

They’re digging themselves further and further into a hole. Their only chance of survival is putting Megan McCain half-naked on every talk show in America.
